This is the simplest and most well-known method for investigating organic compounds.
Functional groups (e.g. amino, hydroxy, acrylate, ether, etc.) in molecules are excited. This generates the IR spectrum. The position of the signal in the IR spectrum is significant for the functional group. Identical spectra indicate identical compounds.
Complex mixtures are investigated as a sum. Individual compounds can be detected with a concentration of approx. 1% or greater.
